Vol. 231 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Driving Licences.

26.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government whether the British driving licence and international driving licence are accepted in this country; and whether there are any reciprocal arrangements on this matter.

British driving licences, in common with licences granted by other countries, as well as international driving permits, are accepted as valid in this country for use by visiting motorists. There are reciprocal arrangements on this, which are regulated by the International Convention on Road Traffic, 1949.

The Convention does not apply to persons changing residence from one country to another nor have we any reciprocal arrangements on that matter. In this country, as elsewhere, the driving licence of the previous country of residence is not accepted as granting exemption from any domestic driving licensing requirements.
