Vol. 231 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Wool.

60.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that following upon the decision to place an embargo on the importation of wool from Great Britain owing to the foot and mouth disease, the price of Irish wool has increased; and if he will take immediate steps to control the price of Irish wool.

The suggestion has been made to me that advantage is being taken of the prohibition on imports of wool from Britain because of the foot and mouth epidemic to procure a higher price of Irish wool. There can be no justification for such action and I am having investigations made into the prices being charged by wool merchants. Prices charged by the sheep owners are not subject to my control.

Would the Minister take steps to expedite the investigation in order to ensure that action will not be too late?

I received the evidence on this about a week ago and the investigations are, I think, nearly completed.
