Vol. 231 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Liquid Escape from Silage Pits.

20.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if liquid escape from silage pits is a danger to fish life in lakes and rivers; and, if so, if he will make a statement as to the precautions that should be taken so as to avoid this danger.

Pollution occurs if effluent from a farm silo is allowed to discharge into a watercourse. The extent of the danger to fish life would depend on the quantity and quality of the effluent, the rate of discharge into the watercourse, the volume of flow in receiving waters and various other factors.

I am having attention given to the disposal of farm wastes generally including silage effluent.
