Vol. 231 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices of Bread and Flour.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is conducting negotiations on the price of flour and bread; and when he hopes to make a statement on this matter.

As indicated in reply to a similar question on 30th November, 1967, it is not the practice to answer questions of this kind.

Is it not true that negotiations are taking place, and is it not true to say that there will be an increase of 4d on a two lb. loaf?

May I refer the Deputy to the reply I have already given?

Is it not true that the price of the loaf will go up?

Is the Minister empowered to say whether there has been an increase in the price of bread and flour?

Forgetting bread and flour, in general, may I point out that in price applications made, it is important very often from the point of view of the applicant that this should be kept confidential unless and until a decision is arrived at. The Deputy will appreciate that advance information could lead to stockpiling and hoarding. It would not be in the public interest that a question of this nature should be answered at this stage.

An increase in price will be announced after the by-election sometime in March.

Are you moving the writ in March?

(Interruptions.)
