Vol. 231 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Hoarding Sign.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government why he recently granted permission to a bill-posting firm to erect a hoarding sign in Sligo when the proposal had been rejected by Sligo Corporation.

The proposal was to erect the structure on a wall on which there already existed three advertising panels with cement frame mouldings. The Planning Authority said that "the structure would be liable to cause traffic hazard due to difficult road layout" but did not indicate how such hazard might arise. The area is one of mixed development, not unsuited to the display of a limited amount of advertising, and I did not consider that the grounds stated by the planning authority justified rejecting the appeal altogether. There was no question of sight-lines at the corner being obstructed. Accordingly, I decided to grant permission subject to a condition regulating the number, size and height of the panels.
