Vol. 231 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Right to Union Membership.

68.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received representations from the Irish Transport and General Workers Union regarding the necessity for the restriction of the payment of industrial grants to firms contributing to the achievement of the national aims for which State aid is provided who are prepared to show practical evidence of their willingness to accept the workers' right to belong to a trade union; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Resolutions adopted by the union on this matter were brought to my notice. As the union has been informed, the Industrial Development Authority which deals in the first instance with industrialists promoting new industries informs these about wage rates, conditions of employment and trade union organisation. It is impressed on these promoters that they should make themselves fully aware of the local position in these respects and they are advised of the advantages of co-operating with trade unions. I do not consider that further action is required.
