Vol. 231 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Fuel.

24.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the ultimate cost, including the price of the turf, transport, storage, handling and delivery of fuel and the clerical costs involved, of a bag of turf furnished weekly to old age and other pensioners and social welfare recipients in certain urban areas.

Subject to final audit in respect of some areas, the cost per cwt for the 1966-67 period was 5s 9½d, excluding the cost of issuing fuel vouchers which, though not ascertainable, may be regarded as insignificant.

25.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if, having regard to the severe hardship which the present free fuel scheme in urban areas imposes on old age pensioners in having to collect or arrange to collect turf at a limited number of depots, he will provide vouchers for turf briquettes exchangeable in any shop in lieu of the existing scheme.

The answer is in the negative.
