(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach if he will state for the latest 12 month period the amount of expenditure at Government level (a) on medical research and (b) on veterinary research.

The direct expenditure at Government level on medical research, consisting of the grant to the Medical Research Council, amounted to £87,500 in the year ended 31st March, 1967. The direct expenditure at Government level on veterinary research amounted to £105,100 in the same year. It is not possible to state what part of the funds received from the Government by Universities, etc, is spent on medical and veterinary research.
