Vol. 232 No. 1

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Increase.

23.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of unemployed on the live register (a) on 12th January, 1967 and (b) on 13th January, 1968; and the reasons for the increase.

The totals for the appropriate dates nearest to those given by the Deputy are:

13th January, 1967

64,373

12th January, 1968

65,246

The Industrial Analysis of the Live Register as at mid-January, 1968, due to be published in a few days' time, will set out the changes, and the reasons therefor so far as they can be determined, since the corresponding date last year.

Have the Government any plans to give work to the unemployed, and are they aware that the figure is rising? Are they further aware that last night we saw a television programme from Limerick city which showed men with wives and families——

We cannot have a debate on this question.

Are the Government aware that there is a spirit of depression amongst those people?

The Deputy may not make a speech on this question.

Have the Government any plans to provide work for the unemployed workers who in some cases have been out of work for eight or ten years?

That is a separate question.

Are the Government silent on that?
