asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware of the serious situation that has been brought about as a result of the increase in air fares; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that any serious situation has developed from the recent increases in air fares which, I am satisfied, were fully justified.

Would the Minister not state if he appreciates that this will adversely affect the tourist trade of this country for one thing?

It may have certain adverse effects on the tourist trade but on the other hand, it will have certain benefits by way of more tourists coming from countries that have not devalued.

In view of the fact that American countries and others are reducing their fares very substantially, would that not affect——

The Deputy is not comparing like with like.
