Vol. 232 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Mayo Ore Deposits.

163.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there are a number of areas in Mayo where deposits of mineral ores are known to be present; and what steps he proposes to take to develop these areas.

164.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to reports which indicate the vast growth in Irish exports of mineral ores, particularly from the Tynagh Mines, County Galway; and if he will take the necessary steps to have the known mineral deposits in Mayo developed as soon as possible.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 163 and 164 together.

The Government do not engage directly in mineral exploration but provides special facilities and incentives to private concerns to engage in the exploration and development of mineral resources. There are, at present, a total of 40 prospecting licences, covering approximately 450 square miles, valid in respect of areas in Mayo. I have approved of the grant of a further 30 licences in the county and applications for an additional 25 are being processed in my Department.

Questions Nos. 165, 166 and 167 postponed.
