Vol. 232 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahir Estate Allocation.

89.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that when the Charteris estate, Cahir, County Tipperary was allocated a family (name supplied) did not get an addition to their holding which contained 11 acres beside the estate; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The selection of allottees is a matter exclusively reserved to the Commissioners. I have ascertained from the Land Commission that an application on behalf of the family referred to in the question was fully considered in competition with other applications received, but that it was found impracticable to provide them with an allotment, having regard to the numerous claims of the other competing applicants.

In deciding as between applicants the Land Commission have to take a variety of items into account, but I would not wish to comment on or openly compare, across the floor of the House, the private affairs of individuals who might be easily recognisable. I can say, however, that in the division of land—all other things being equal— preference is given by the Land Commission to married applicants who have families to support.
