Vol. 232 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appointment of Dentists.

57.

asked the Minister for Health what steps he is taking to have more dentists appointed to the national dental service.

I recently reviewed the conditions attaching to dental posts in the health authority service and in order to make such posts more attractive I have approved of changes in the conditions of recruitment and service. These changes are as follows:—

(1) the age limit for new applicants is raised to 55;

(2) increments on the salary scale will be allowed for previous experience; and

(3) serving officers may be allowed work for the health authority outside normal hours for which they will be paid at the standard sessional rate.

A competition will soon be held to recruit permanent dentists to the local authority service and I hope these improvements in the conditions of service will attract many more candidates than we have been getting for recent competitions.

Could the Minister say when the advertisements are likely to be published?

As soon as possible, as far as I am concerned.

Is it now over to the Civil Service Commissioners?
