Vol. 232 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Pedestrian Crossing.

7.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to provide a pedestrian crossing as soon as possible on Phibsboro Road, Dublin, between Monck Place and the North Circular Road junction.

The provision of pedestrian crossings is a matter for the local authority concerned acting at the request, or with the consent, of the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána. I understand that consideration of the question of providing a pedestrian crossing at the location mentioned is being deferred by Dublin Corporation, pending the receipt and examination by them of their consultant's traffic management proposals for routes in the area.

Is the Minister aware of the tremendous volume of traffic now coming in from the Ballymun housing area on this road due to the fact that there is no right-hand turn at the North Circular Road and people wishing to go to the North Circular Road have to travel down this road?

I am so aware, but the responsible authority in this respect is Dublin Corporation and they have traffic management study in progress at present. They consider it undesirable to do anything to alter existing traffic patterns until that study is completed. We have to wait until that is done. They have received representations in this regard but they have not received a request from the Commissioner of the Garda.
