Vol. 232 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Atlantian Buses.

9.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether in his opinion there is a tendency to skid in the Atlantian type of bus of which there are now 160 in service by CIE in Dublin; and whether he will conduct an investigation into the number of accidents caused by skidding of this type of bus to establish whether the wheel positioning is correct in relation to the bus size.

I have no evidence that the Atlantian type bus is more likely to skid than any other type of large public service vehicle, but I am having an investigation made into the number of accidents caused by skidding of this type of bus. I might add, however, that the assessment of skidding tendency of a vehicle is a complex matter. The bus involved in the recent accident at Clontarf was not an Atlantian but an "R" type bus. With regard to the wheel positioning in relation to the size of buses the amount of overhang is governed by the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963, and both the Atlantian and the "R" type bus conform with the regulations.

Ní féidir liom focal a chloisint.

I do not think the equipment can be working.
