Vol. 232 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wearing of Crash Helmets.

41.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the number of fatal accidents arising out of falls from motor cycles, he will introduce legislation making the wearing of crash helmets compulsory.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will make the wearing of crash helmets compulsory in view of the fatalities in many accidents involving motor cyclists who were not protected.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 41 and 42 together.

As indicated in a reply to a similar question on 8th March, 1966, the measure suggested would be impractical in the absence of adequate controls over the standards of helmets. A provision to achieve this is included in the Road Traffic Bill, at present before the House.
