Vol. 232 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withholding of Rate Demands.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the fact that the ban on fairs in the West has caused a grave shortage of money he will make arrangements to have the rate demands to farmers withheld until the restrictions are lifted.

I would refer the Deputy to the recent decision of the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries which permits the resumption, on and from 29th February, of trading generally at marts and fairs.

The Minister may not be aware that, in the West, some of these fairs may not be held until the following month, which would be too late to pay rates. What will he do in that case?

I do not fix when the fairs are held.

I am not satisfied with the Minister's reply. I may take up the matter again tonight. I may take him away from some Taca dinner.
