Vol. 232 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk Processing Plant.

5.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if there are proposals before him for the establishment of a plant for milk processing in South Sligo or Mayo; and if he will make a statement on these proposals.

I have been considering certain proposals for the establishment of milk processing plants in the North West by the local co-operative societies and the Dairy Disposal Company. In view of the size of the area, it would appear that at least two plants may be required. In considering the proposals, and in particular the question of the location of any new plants, it is, of course, necessary to have regard to the general question of creamery re-organisation and, as the Deputy is no doubt aware, this question is at present being examined by two consultants from the United States. I hope, however, that it will shortly be possible to have further discussions with the co-operative societies in the North West about the milk processing proposals for the area.
