Vol. 232 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Entry into Apprenticeship.

33.

asked the Minister for Labour (a) the number of boys registered as eligible for apprenticeship in 1967, and (b) the number of boys who secured apprenticeship in 1967.

There is no requirement under the Industrial Training Act, 1967 for the keeping of a register of boys eligible for apprenticeship, and An Chomhairle Oiliúna does not consider it necessary to keep such a register for the purposes of its functions under the Act.

Every boy who reaches the age of 15 and passed in certain subjects in either the day group certificate examination or the intermediate certificate examination in 1967 became eligible to enter apprenticeship. However, passes in different subjects have been specified for different trades so it is not possible to state the total number of boys who became eligible for apprenticeship during 1967. Even if this information were available it would be of little value because there is no way of knowing how many of the total number of eligible boys wish to become apprentices.

I am informed by An Chomhairle Oiliúna that the number of boys who secured apprenticeship and were registered during 1967 was 1,691.
