Vol. 232 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Suspension of Driving Licences.

37.

(Dublin South-Central) and Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Justice the number of motorists whose driving licences were suspended in each of the last three years following conviction on charges on drunken driving.

Disqualification for driving is mandatory on a conviction for driving or attempting to drive a mechanically propelled vehicle while drunk.

The number of persons convicted of this offence in the year ended 30th September, 1967, was 884. In the previous year the number was 844. The available figures for earlier years combine this offence with some other associated ones such as riding a bicycle while drunk. The number of persons convicted of all those offences in the year ended 30th September, 1965, was 957. The corresponding total figures for 1966 and 1967 were 1,095 and 1,183 respectively.
