Vol. 233 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of Onions.

5.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the disquiet expressed at a recent meeting of Kerry County Committee of Agriculture which was attended by the Parliamentary Secretary regarding the premature removal of the embargo on foreign onions, and the consequent loss to the extent of thousands of pounds to the onion growers of the county; and if he will make a statement on arrangements regarding the matter in the future.

I am aware of the discussion at the meeting but I do not accept the suggestion about losses. Resumption of imports this year was in fact three weeks later than last year and onion traders and merchants undertook to co-operate in the disposal of any remaining stocks. My information is that this undertaking is being honoured and that only a relatively small quantity now remains. It would not be feasible to wait until all stocks are cleared before allowing imports.
