Vol. 233 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - US Travel Restrictions.

2.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether representations have been made to the US Government for special concessions for Ireland in respect of the recently announced American travel restrictions; if so, if he will give details; and the results to date.

As I indicated in reply to questions about this matter on 13th February, 1968, the Government have made representations to the United States Government expressing deep concern about the possible effects of the proposed restrictions on our tourist industry. The representations were based mainly on the fact that tourism is of vital importance to the Irish economy and that it accounts for more than one-fifth of our total foreign earnings.

It is not possible to say, at this stage, what the results of the representations will be.
