Vol. 233 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Industrial Employment.

17.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the general need for the provision of worthwhile employment of an industrial nature in Ferbane, County Offaly; if he will bear in mind the reasonable claims of the district as the location of a worthwhile industry; and if he will arrange for officers of his Department to offer advice to prospective industrialists and others who may be investing in the establishment of Irish industries in this area where manpower is available.

I am aware of the need for establishing new industries in Ferbane and other areas. The selection of a location for an industrial project is, however, a matter for the promoters and those proposing to invest their capital in the project. The Government provides valuable facilities to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. It is for private enterprise to take advantage of these facilities and local interests should do their best to encourage private enterprise to set up industries in their own areas.

I can assure the Deputy that any sound proposals by local or other interests for the establishment of industries in Ferbane will receive all possible assistance from my Department and from the Industrial Development Authority.
