Vol. 233 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glasgow-Derry Passenger Service.

1.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will arrange with the Burns and Laird Lines Limited for the restoration of the Glasgow to Derry passenger service; and if he is aware of the general demand for this service in County Donegal.

I am sure that the Deputy appreciates that there is no effective action which I could take in this matter. I explained in reply to previous questions by him on this subject that the shipping company concerned which is not subject to my control found itself unable to continue the service for economic reasons. There are several satisfactory alternative services via short sea route between Glasgow and Donegal and I am informed that this termination of their services should not affect adversely tourist traffic in Donegal.

Of course, if it were only for economic reasons, the Minister has the power in his hands. If it were economic reasons, the subsidy would meet it.

Yes, if it were felt justified.

Why not say that? That would be more truthful.

It is part and parcel of the same answer.
