Vol. 233 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Packing of Sweets.

59.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the danger to young children from slender tubes of small coloured sweets recently described by a coroner as lethal weapons in the hands of a child; and if he will initiate a full-scale inquiry into the hazards to children of such methods of packing and manufacture in order to eliminate fatalities.

I have seen newspaper reports of a recent unfortunate fatality in which a young child lost his life as a result of eating sweets from a tube of the type described by the Deputy. I do not consider that there is any action that I could usefully take in the matter by way of public inquiry or otherwise. The wide publicity given to this tragic accident should, however, bring home to parents and others the potential danger of these toys.
