Vol. 233 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lay-off of Oil Refinery Staff.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the laying off of staff at Whitegate oil refinery, County Cork is causing much concern among the workers and to people in Midleton town generally; and if he will comment on this matter.

I am not aware of concern regarding the laying off of staff at the refinery. I am informed that a number of workers availed themselves of a voluntary severance scheme introduced last year with the object of having a more efficient organisation of the refinery. Apart from this, I am not aware that staff have been laid off.
