Vol. 233 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Education.

7.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the present position regarding the future of university education outside Dublin.

The Commission on Higher Education has published in its Presentation and Summary Report and in the first volume of its main Report an estimate that the numbers of students in Irish universities will rise from 13,000 in 1964-65 to 23,000 in 1975. It is clear that, if a demand of this magnitude is to be met, our facilities for university education both in Dublin and outside of it will have to be expanded.

Pending publication and consideration of the second volume of the Commission's Report, it will not be possible to announce final decisions as to future policy in this regard. In the meantime, however, certain developments are taking place at University College, Cork, of which the most important is the provision of a new building for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematical Sciences now in course of construction at an estimated cost of £1,600,000; while at University College, Galway, the provision of a new building for Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry to cost £1,750,000 has been sanctioned.
