Vol. 233 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Livestock.

3.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if his attention has been drawn to a report of the inadequacy of the system of transport for livestock; if the figures mentioned are accurate; if he is satisfied that the number of merchandise licence-holders carrying livestock is adequate; and, if not, what action he proposes to take.

I have seen the report mentioned in the Deputy's question. According to the information available to me, 75 holders of merchandise licences in the counties of Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Louth and Wicklow engage in livestock haulage as compared with the figure of 40 given in the report.

Review of road transport facilities for merchandise in general and livestock in particular is a continuing process. In December, 1967 I decided to extend the scope of operation of certain merchandise licences so as to allow countrywide livestock haulage. To date some 370 licensees have availed themselves of this concession. At present 470 merchandise licensees, including CIE are authorised to carry livestock anywhere in the State and 300 other licensees can carry livestock in restricted areas. There is no evidence to show that adequate livestock transport is not now available for the carriage of livestock.

It is too soon to assess the effects of the action I took in December last but I am keeping the position under review.
