Vol. 234 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Free Education Scheme.

47.

asked the Minister for Education the number and size of secondary schools operating in the free education scheme in the Dún Laoghaire area; and the number of secondary schools in that area which do not operate the scheme.

It was open to 11 schools in the Borough of Dún Laoghaire to opt for participation in the free post-primary education scheme. Four schools opted in and are now providing free education for 1,188 pupils. Seven schools having 1,355 day pupils opted to remain outside the scheme.

In addition, there are four schools under Protestant management in the area. Assistance for pupils in these schools is provided through a central representative agency under a special provision of the free education scheme.
