Vol. 234 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Fish Freezing Plant.

18.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the grave concern caused to workers employed at the Galway fish freezing plant by the reported proposal to close down the plant; and if he has taken steps to ensure that no hardship will be caused to the workers concerned in the event of such a close-down.

I am aware of the report referred to by the Deputy. The fish processing factory involved is operated at present by a private company under lease from An Bord Iascaigh Mhara. I understand that in case the company should close down the factory, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara is actively negotiating with a number of other parties interested in acquiring the factory with a view to maintaining it in operation but I cannot at this stage say what may be the outcome.
