Vol. 234 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Technical Training Scholarships.

37.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied that 20 scholarships for technical training for teachers of metalwork are sufficient for the whole country, particularly as it is mandatory that four of these scholarships be allotted to the Gaeltacht.

It is hoped that a minimum of 20 students will be found suitable for acceptance on the course for training metalwork teachers which is due to start this year. There is provision for an extension of this number to 25 students provided sufficient suitable candidates are forthcoming.

Four places on the course are reserved for candidates from Gaeltacht areas. Where, however, those places are not taken up by Gaeltacht candidates they are available to other successful candidates.

I am satisfied that this provision is sufficient in present circumstances.

I take it that, instead of 20 scholarships, the Minister said there will be 25?

I said there is provision for an extension of the number to 25 students, provided sufficient suitable candidates are forthcoming.
