Vol. 234 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Telephone Service.

10.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will take steps to provide a 24-hour telephone service for the subscribers in Ballydehob, County Cork, and the surrounding districts.

The introduction of a 24-hour service in Ballydehob exchange is not warranted at present. A number of subscribers have continuous service by means of switching to a continuous service exchange when Ballydehob is closed.

Is the Minister aware that there are 24 subscribers in Ballydehob and is he aware that Ballydehob is located in a tourist district? Surely the Minister realises that in such a district a 24-hour telephone service is essential —in a place such as Ballydehob with a town population of 400? If so, will he reconsider his decision in view of the statements made by the Minister himself in the course of visits to West Cork that he would give every assistance possible to the development of tourism in that area? In the light of such statements, will he now reconsider this application for a 24-hour service at Ballydehob?

I have stated that there are a number of lines which enjoy a night service, and this matter will be examined from time to time. The 24-hour service is expanding steadily throughout the country as the service grows in density. I will have another look at it.

I am pleased, and I think the Minister will provide it within a month or two.
