Vol. 234 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing for Aged Persons.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider increasing housing grants to voluntary societies and organisations who seek to provide new dwellings for the aged.

These grants were first introduced in 1962, and in the period 1963 to date, proposals involving the provision of 690 dwelling units have been approved by my Department. This satisfactory response does not indicate that there is a need for revising the existing level of grants.

Would the Minister consider publicising the scheme of grants so that the people may be more aware of their availibility? Also I would appeal particularly to people in the city who organise protest marches to channel their energy into doing something useful, apart from carrying protest placards.

I thought Deputy Moore wanted increased grants.

They are not using them.

The Minister says they are.

What I said was that very considerable use has been made of these grants.

Not enough.

I shall bring the Deputy's remarks to the attention of the Minister.
