Vol. 235 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Facilities for Postal Degrees.

77.

asked the Minister for Education if he intends to ask the university authorities to co-operate with him in the provision of facilities for postal degrees in Ireland.

As stated in reply to a similar question on 21st February, 1968, the matter of providing extern degree facilities is one within the competence of the University authorities and which no doubt will fall to be considered in relation to the future provision for higher education. I hope to have concrete proposals in regard to all matters concerning higher education including the point raised by the Deputy incorporated in proposed legislation which will come before the Dáil after the summer recess.

Will it be similar to the University of London where degrees in science and economics are issued without any restrictions?

I would envisage this matter, and a host of other matters in regard to higher education, coming within the ambit of a higher education authority which we hope will be established, provided the necessary legislation is passed by the Oireachtas.
