Vol. 235 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Westmeath Unemployed.

18.

asked the Minister for Labour the total number on the live register in County Westmeath at the latest available date; and what prospects of employment there are for those people who are willing to work.

The latest date for which particulars are available of registered unemployed for the whole of County Westmeath is 26th April, 1968. The total registered unemployed on that date was 911.

The Government provides valuable facilities through the Industrial Development Authority to encourage the establishment and development of industries in all areas. Any sound proposals by local or other interests in Westmeath are assured of these facilities.

The task of the Employment Service of my Department is to place persons in touch with jobs that are notified to the Employment Offices.

Is the Minister aware that, according to the Industrial Development Authority survey team report on grants, the midlands are not getting their fair share of new grants and aids to industry? What action does the Minister intend to take to rectify that position?

The Industrial Development Authority does not direct industrialists to any particular area.

They can certainly advise and make recommendations.

The Minister for Industry and Commerce explained the position in detail a few days ago. They explain to industrialists what facilities are available in the different areas. They do not direct industrialists to any particular area.

But the Government claim the credit afterwards when the factories are erected in certain areas. Is that not true?

It is not.

Especially during by-elections.
