Vol. 235 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Research into Alcoholism.

64.

asked the Minister for Health the total extent of grants by his Department for research into alcoholism in each of the past five years.

No specific grant towards research into alcoholism was paid from the funds of my Department in the period in question.

A grant of £2,000 was, however, made from the Hospitals Trust Fund to the Irish National Council on Alcholism during the year 1966-67 to assist in its establishment. One of the Council's aims is to conduct, promote and support research in, and treatment of alcoholism, and to disseminate the information obtained.

In addition the following grants were paid by health authorities with my approval to the Council:—

1966-67

£750

1967-68

£3,400

1968-69 (to date)

£2,300

Total

£6,450

These grants are regarded as health expenditure and rank for recoupment from Health Service Grant.

Would the Minister not agree there is need for more money to deal with this problem?

I suppose so. The council is doing a good job.

The Minister halfheartedly agrees. I presume he agrees there is need for research?

We would not give the money otherwise.
