Vol. 236 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant for Children's Books.

58.

asked the Minister for Education if anything further has been done regarding transfer to the county library committees of the £15 per annum grant for children's books which is at present paid to primary schools, since a reply of 28th February, 1968, in which he stated that consideration was being given to this matter.

I wish to refer the Deputy to my reply of 28th February, 1968. The investigation of the matter has not yet been completed.

Would the Minister say what has happened the grant this year? Will it be paid to the library committees or to the schools?

We have specific plans for the coming financial year, 1968-69, for the Deputy's county of Meath, County Limerick, Cork city and county and Dublin city and county involving the local authorities.

The Minister is aware that there is a grant this year——

To the library committee, not to the local authority.

The grant has been paid to the individual schools.

To particular schools, but we are bringing in the local authorities next year.

The Minister is aware that by paying it to the individual schools the same value cannot be obtained?

Starting from next year, we will be paying it through the local authorities.
