asked the Minister for Labour if he will state in respect of the period January, 1968, to June, 1968, or such period as may be available (a) the number of cases of redundancies notified to his Department and the number of firms involved, (b) the average lump sum redundancy payment, (c) the average weekly redundancy payment, (d) the number of firms that had each dismissed one or two persons only for reasons of redundancy, and (e) the number of claims for weekly redundancy payment at the end of June, 1968.

The particulars requested by the Deputy are as follows:—

(a) The number of redundancies notified to my Department in the period 1st January, 1968, to 21st June, 1968, the latest date for which these figures are available, was 2,012 involving 1,563 men and 449 women. The number of firms involved was 425.

(b) The average lump sum redundancy payment in the same period was £124 12s 4d.

(c) The average weekly redundancy payment in the period 1st January, 1968, to 14th June, 1968, the latest date for which this information is available, amounted to £5 16s 6d. Weekly redundancy payments are additional to any Social Welfare entitlement.

(d) A total of 309 firms each dismissed one or two persons only for reasons of redundancy in the period 1st January, 1968, to 21st June, 1968.

(e) In the week ended 14th June, 1968, the number of weekly redundancy payments made was 586.
