Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reformatory Schools.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if he will list all the subjects which are taught to boys in reformatory schools; and if he will outline what schemes, if any, are in operation to encourage boys to take a full educational course in these schools.

There is only one reformatory school for boys. The subjects taught are Irish, English, mathematics, history, geography, music, metalwork, woodwork, mechanical drawing, electricity and magnetism, religious knowledge, civics, arts and crafts.

The instruction in the vocational subjects prepares the boys for the manual group certificate examination.

Is there any provision for psychiatric supervision of the boys or girls in reformatory institutions with a view to assisting them on the road to rehabilitation where there is a psychiatric defect?

I would assume that there is.

So would I, but I am afraid the Minister may well find out that there is not. I am not talking about psychology.

Which is also important.

Psychology my foot.

46.

asked the Minister for Education the average per capita expenditure on boys in reformatory schools for 1966 and 1967.

The average per capita expenditure from public funds on boys in the reformatory school in the years 1966 and 1967 was £201 and £216 respectively.

47.

asked the Minister for Education the number of boys at present in reformatory schools; and the average length of time they spend there.

The number of boys at present in the reformatory school is 121. The average length of time spent by boys there is 19 months.
