Vol. 236 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Pre-Registration Year.

49.

asked the Minister for Education whether his Department have any plans to abolish the pre-registration year which all secondary teachers are required to do.

The pre-registration or probationary year is one of the conditions prescribed by the Secondary Teachers' Registration Council and therefore any question of its abolition would primarily be a matter for that body. The Secondary Teachers' Registration Council is a statutory body on which I am represented together with the universities and the recognised associations of school managers and teachers.

The remuneration of all teachers during the probationary year is among the items covered in the Report of the Tribunal on Teachers' Salaries, which is still under consideration.
