Vol. 236 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Forest Fires.

66.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state, (a) the number of forest fires that have taken place over the last seven years, (b) the estimated damage caused by these fires and (c) the amount of money spent by his Department in advertising the dangers of forest fires in newspapers and on television for the same period.

During the seven years ended 31st March, 1968, a total of 2,934 fires were reported in the vicinity of State forests. Two hundred and fifty of the fires caused damage to plantations burning an area of 2,366 acres and causing damage amounting in the aggregate to £73,595.

Press, radio and television gave valuable service in publicity campaigns directed towards reducing the incidence of loss and damage through forest fires; payments for space in press advertising over the period in question amounted to £8,520.

I wish to give notice of my intention to raise the subject matter of Question 21 on the Order Paper today on the Adjournment, in view of the unsatisfactory nature of the Minister's reply.

The Deputy will be communicated with.

Is that not the purest window-dressing seeing that Deputy Corry knows quite well that he cannot raise a question on the Adjournment today because we are discussing the Adjournment?

Deputy Corry will do his work in this House as he has always done it and he will still be doing it after Deputy Dillon has got his dismissal.

But not by codology.

When I am Chairman of Cork County Council, I will do my duty to the people who sent me there.

You had a close run — out of a hat.

Out of the hat he is talking through now.
