Vol. 236 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo School Facilities.

73.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the very serious concern of parents and guardians of children in the Newport area, County Mayo, because as a result of his recent statement children must travel long distances to schools in Westport and other towns; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this situation.

Free transport to post-primary schools has been provided for all the pupils in the Newport area. I am satisfied that this will not involve any pupil spending an inordinate amount of time on a bus journey. It will, in fact, obviate the hardships which many pupils experienced before the introduction of the scheme of free transport.
