Vol. 236 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Community Facilities.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will request local authorities building large housing schemes to make provision in their plans for swimming pools and community centres.

Housing authorities, in submitting proposals for any large housing scheme, are required to make provision for essential community facilities. I have already recommended to them, by circular letters, that in considering the suitability of housing sites regard should be had to the need to have community facilities within reasonable distances of the sites. It is not always practicable, however, to insist on such facilities being provided at the same time as the dwellings, because many interests may be involved. Delay in providing urgently needed housing accommodation could result from such insistence.
