Vol. 236 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Physical Training in Schools.

80.

asked the Minister for Education whether his Department have any plans to remedy the present lack of physical training in the education of primary schoolchildren; and whether he will comment on the present state of physical training in the vocational and secondary school system.

Physical education is an optional subject in primary schools. A revised programme of instruction for this subject is included in the draft working document on the new curriculum for primary schools.

The curriculum for post-primary schools should include provision for physical education or organised athletic games. A new syllabus for physical education in these schools is in course of preparation also.

Special in-service training courses in physical education for primary and post-primary schools are held each summer.
