Vol. 237 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Training of ESB Engineers.

27.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will state with reference to the statement made by the Parliamentary Secretary to the effect that this country will have a nuclear generating station within the next ten years and that engineers have gone abroad to train in the design and operation of nuclear powered stations, the number of such persons at present abroad at such study; the cost of this training to the State; what period this training will take; and the countries where such training is in progress.

The statement made was that no decision had been taken by the Government or the ESB to establish a nuclear power station but that it seems that it will be a necessary step within the next ten years, so that we will not have too great a dependence on any one kind of fuel. I am informed that the Electricity Supply Board have at present four engineers undergoing training for a period of about one year with the Atomic Energy Authority in Great Britain. The cost is a matter solely for the ESB.
