Vol. 237 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ground Limestone Sales.

36.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the quantity of ground limestone sold to Irish farmers from 1st January, 1968, to the latest date for which figures are available.

Figures are available only for the period 8th January, 1968, to 15th September, 1968. The quantity of ground limestone on which transport subsidy was paid during that period was 1,211,274 tons.

In view of the decrease in the distribution of ground limestone could the Minister take the necessary steps, either by way of advertisement or some other method, to see that the use of ground limestone on farms will be increased?

Does the Deputy mean production?

No, the use of ground limestone by encouragement.

This is something which over the years we have endeavoured by every possible means to get across. Indeed, while the quantity is big and is costing the State a considerable amount of money, it is money well spent. We are endeavouring and will continue to endeavour to get a greater use of it.

Would the Minister consider advertising in the Farmers' Journal?

Will Deputy Harte please cease interrupting?
