Vol. 237 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Decimal Coins.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance when the first Irish decimal coins will be introduced.

It is hoped to issue the 5 new pence and 10 new pence coins next summer. The exact dates will be announced early next year when I am introducing the necessary enabling legislation. These coins will have the same technical specifications and values as the present shilling and florin and will be used as such until Decimal Day, the 15th February, 1971. Similarly, if it is decided to issue a 50 new pence coin, which would have the value ten shillings, this will be done before Decimal Day. The other decimal coins to be introduced have not exact equivalents in existing coinage and will not be put into circulation until Decimal Day.
