Vol. 237 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Breathalyser Test.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is expected that the breathalyser test will be in operation.

The Deputy will by now be aware of the establishment of the Road Safety Medical Bureau. There is a fair amount of preparatory work to be carried out by the Bureau and some time will, therefore, elapse before the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Act, 1968, can be put into operation; however, I hope that this can be done by next Summer.

Can the Minister say if the testing apparatus has as yet been made available?

No, the Bureau was set up only last week.

That was not the question I asked the Minister. The Minister knows that the type of apparatus that will be required is not available.

That has been suggested here but it will be a matter for the Bureau which has been set up to decide on the apparatus.

(Cavan): Have no inquiries been made by the Minister's Department since the Act became law as to whether this equipment is available?

I understand that there are no difficulties in regard to the equipment. As I have said, the Bureau has been set up only during the past week.

The Minister was too busy carving up the constituencies.

The question of constituencies does not arise.

That is a different problem; there is no Bureau for that.
