Vol. 237 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Slaughterings.

65.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of pigs slaughtered at factories in each of the years 1964, 1965, 1966, 1967 and 1968 to date; and what future he envisages for the pig industry.

The figures requested are:

1964

1,566,573

1965

1,797,404

1966

1,643,893

1967

1,448,553

1968 (to 30th November)

1,519,574

We have been moving out of the low point in the pig cycle which occurred in 1967 and I am confident that this recovery will be further accelerated by the measures announced in the 1968 Budget to assist pig production.

It is my aim to encourage a substantial expansion in pig production, especially by small farmers, and I am glad to say that the various measures taken to this end are showing promising results.
