Vol. 238 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Strikes.

27.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of (a) official and (b) unofficial strikes which took place in the State during the calendar year 1968; and the estimated loss to the economy for the same period.

There were 130 strikes in 1968. As the status of a strike may change while it is in progress it would be difficult to divide them accurately into official and unofficial. While there were somewhat more unofficial than official strikes in 1968, the official strikes accounted for just 80 per cent of the 400,000 man-days lost. This figure does not include workers laid off in firms other than those in which the strikes occurred.

The complete financial ramifications of strikes are so complex as to make it virtually impossible to assess the loss over the whole economy in a given period.

Did Deputy Gilhawley try to settle them?

I am afraid that I would have to have notice of that question.

He would settle more than the Minister.

How did you get on a turkey committee?
